Water Leak Detection Specialist

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Proficient in using amplified listening devices and can differentiate a leak
sound vs background noise.
 Proficient in using ground microphone and understand that there will be
discrepancies due to the gradient being listened to.
 Able to obtain a pressure reading on a service connection and compare
against adjacent lines looking for pressure differences that may confirm the
branch the leak is located on.
 Proficient in software and able to record their work in OWWSC application.
 Perform short segment step tests to confirm whether a leak is present.
 Proficient in using metal detector to discover missing assets such as hidden
valves.
 Review Netbase data and develop strategies for field planning.
 Must be proficient in utilizing various leak detection methods, including
amplified listening sticks, ground microphones, accelerometers, correlation
techniques (hydrophone and normal), in-line inspection methods, tracer gas
options, and pipe tracers.
 Should have basic understanding of DMAs (District Metered Area)
Establishment, Monitoring, and reduction strategies.
 Should have hands-on experience in measuring flow readings using a
portable ultrasonic flow meter and measuring pressure readings using
portable pressure gauges.
 Should have experience in performing Pressure Drop Tests.
 Should be able to read and understand utilities GIS drawings. Able to
interpret the highlighted pipes provided by OWWSC data and leverage this in
their leak detection activities.
 Hands on experience in using Severn/FAST Leak detection equipment or
similar.
 Carry out leakage detection surveys:
a. identifying leaks (visible, invisible leaks)
b. marking the location on site; and
c. reporting them via the leak reporting application
ii. identifying faulty meters
a. reporting them to the local Operations team so that meter replacement
tickets can be raised
 Identify illegal connections
a. reporting them to the local Operations team so that the connections can be disconnected
 Follow up surveys to verify that:
a. the O&M Contractors have repaired the leaks reported via the leak
reporting application;
b. Faulty meters have been replaced
c. Illegal connections have been disconnected.
v. After an invisible leak has been repaired the Leakage Detection
Contractor will re-visit the area to determine if other leaks exist nearby that
may have been hidden from detection due to the noise of the first leak.
